Why is it called the Sunshine Coast? Is it really because it’s sunnier than Vancouver?
Gibsons and Sechelt each get about 2,400 hours of sunshine each year compared to 1,930 in Vancouver but that’s not actually where the name comes from.
In 1914, Harry Roberts painted “Sunshine Belt” on the side of a house built on the original Roberts Creek wharf. He hoped that the sign would promote Roberts Creek as a destination for summer travelers.
The name stuck until 1951 when Black Ball Ferries started referring to the wider region as the Sunshine Coast, whereas the Sunshine Belt referred only to Roberts Creek
Now, more than 100 years after it was originally named, the modern Sunshine Coast stretches from Port Mellon all the way to Lund, a village roughly 30 kilometers north of Powell River.
And that’s why it’s called the Sunshine Coast.
