If you do any hiking on BC’s Sunshine Coast, you’ve likely noticed bags of doggy deposits hanging in trees or placed on rocks. It seems to be getting worse and is a pet peeve of mine, pun intended.
The general misconception is that because the bags are “biodegradable,” it’s fine to fill them with doggy doo and lob them up a tree. Unfortunately for the rest of us, the Turd Fairies of the Sunshine Coast don’t understand how long it takes a biodegradable plastic bag to break down. The best-case scenario is that these bags start to degrade within six months.
Throwing bagged dog poo anywhere other than a provided bin is considered littering and if caught, perpetrators could be fined.
If you’ve noticed this being a problem at your favourite beach, trail, or park, you’re encouraged to contact the authorities using the phone numbers near the top of this post.
